NATURE
OF THE ASSOCIATION
The Asociación Centro Cultural y Artesanal Pop Atz’iaq,
commonly referred to as Pop Atz´iaq (the Story of Weaving),
is a private, civic, not for profit association without affiliation
to political parties or religious groups. It is dedicated to
social, cultural and economic development over the short medium
and long terms.
MISSION:
- Pop Atz´iaq´s aim is to organize and support
Mayan population in order to eliminate social inequality,
poverty, exploitation, discrimination and exclusion.
- To promote economic development by strengthening the
Community System, which is in accordance with Mayan principles,
and not endorse a system of individual lucrative gain.
- To establish community development programs that focus
on the social, economic, cultural and political problems
of the Mayan people.
VISION:
- That the Mayan people may become the founders of a new
society in which everyone is granted equal rights within
the political, economic, social and cultural spheres.
- That the Community System may prosper and take precedence
in any work within the population, thus benefiting the collective.
- That the projects may confront social injustice and its
effects, and that any profits from the programs may be used
to further the aims of the association.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES:
- To promote cultural, social and economic development of
the Mayan population, especially in the Western Highlands
of Guatemala.
- To promote and execute education, training, production
and other social service programs.
- To coordinate efforts of development institutions, be
they national or international, public or private, through
the realization of development projects with Maya populations.
- To promote the value of Mayan identity, culture and cosmovision,
considering these values to be central axes for the development
of the country.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
- To create conditions to enable relationship building between
communities, in order to foster community development projects.
- To raise the consciousness of the population with respect
to our political, economic and social realities.
- To work in community to unify criterion and strengths
for organizational unity.
