What to Look Out For When Shopping Online
There are terrific advantages to doing your shopping online. Apart from the obvious benefit of being able to sit comfortably in your own home, buying products online is often much cheaper than purchasing locally, as online retailers do not have the high overheads of brick and mortar shops. Even buying large products like furniture is possible as many companies offer free shipping. However, when shopping online to be careful about where you submit your personal details and follow these simple safety measures.
Know the website
If possible always choose a website that is well known and reputable. Big sites like Best Buy, Amazon.com and Walmart are great websites for online shopping. If the website also has a brick and mortar store the chances are these are very safe sites to purchase from.
Read the privacy policy
When you visit a website it is very likely they are collecting information about you. This will usually be your IP address, your country and the browser you are using. However, when you make a purchase you will also need to submit your credit card number or PayPal details. Read the privacy policy to make sure you know what the company are going to do with the information you give them. If the website you are on does not have a privacy policy, so not give your information as all reputable sites will provide a privacy policy.
Make sure the website URL is secure
Before you fill in any details check the URL in the address bar of your browser. If it is secure you will see that it begins with HTTPS Instead of just HTTP. If you do not see any “S” at the end look for another merchant to purchase from.
Check the refund policy
Before buying, make sure you know the company’s policy on returns. If they do not accept returns or give refunds you might be better off purchasing elsewhere, unless it is a product that you are sure will be to your liking.
